In Melbourne I go to DeJour jeans in Brunswick. https://dejourjeans.com.au/ They are a bit of a local institution.

I think the consensus here is that Calibre charge a lot of for a 'fashion-forward' garment that - uses a lot of synthetic fibres - cuts corners on construction - will be dated in a few seasons. And that for the price you are better off at MJ Bale. But I could be wrong ;)

Some moths ate through the collar of my wool/mohair suit (which was poking up through the top of an old torn suit bag). Jenny had a look at it and showed me some sample repairs she has done in the past. In the end I decided not to go through with, as the cost was almost $1,000 (the moths had a...

Those of us who subscribe to The Monthly were treated to a great article on Robert Saville, the only professional tailor between Canberra and Melbourne who worked in the same Albury shop for 57 years. The article is a tribute to a great man and a great art. This is a gift link, free to the...

Yeah, the sample work she showed me was impressive. Re: Tom Ford. This is great (old) blog post about the innards of a Tom Ford suit. https://tuttofattoamano.blogspot.com/2010/10/tom-ford.html That's from 2010. Anyone know if its still relevant?

This gives you an idea of Tom Ford at RRP at Harrolds: https://www.harrolds.com.au/man/designers/tom-ford Harrolds do have sales. I recall (from a decade ago) they give decent discounts. About 25-50% off. I was in American Tailors a few weeks ago asking about suit repair. My first and...

Melbourne people often recommend Bancroft's in South Yarra for your extra-special suits and jackets. https://bancrofts.com.au/ Expensive though.

Anyway - sharing some stories from the past year. My son is of an age where he needed a good suit and shoes for his school stage band concerts and school formals. He needed a black suit for Generations in Jazz in May. He was still very small across the shoulders so op-shops gave no joy. He was...

I guess it will have to do. I gave him the number from her old Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/MagikClothing/ I was at American Tailors the other day (long story) and Sebastian mentioned a tailor in Elwood who he regards as Melbourne's best. I think this is the man in question (he's...

    LOAKE APPRECIATION THREAD

It took me a long, long time to break in my Loake Aldwychs. I had almost resigned myself to being stuck with uncomfortable shoes. Now they are gorgeous, hard-wearing shoes that I can walk in all day. Had them almost 10 years now and they still shine up a treat. I think there is a bit of luck...

Canali Suit Construction Quality in 2020

Just bumping this. The link is now broken, does anyone have an archive of it? I've been fortunate enough to get to know the Canali distributer in Australia and I used to be up-to-date with deciphering the model numbers, which gave great confidence in buying second-hand suits online. Post...

Hello again. Time to come out of 'retirement' - Nice to see some familiar faces are still posting. I'll start with a quick question. A friend of mine who lives south of the river needs some alterations done to a good dinner suit (he's lost 20kg). I used to see Arthur in South Yarra but he...

I picked up my MJ Bale suit jacket for $89. It's half-canvassed suit with a hand finished collar. I've bought Canali suits and other hand-finished Italian suits from Azzaro for around $500. The cost to actually make a suit is often divorced from it's RRP which has to pay for shop rent and...

Interesting. I bought an OTR double-breasted suit from Peter Jackson two years ago. Their standard block (in a long jacket) fits me beautifully. My wife as a rule hates double-breasted but not even she could argue with the awesomeness of this suit. Whereas the MJ Bale suit I've just taken for...
