    Does anyone know a way of identifying which last boots were made on, other than Zippy's heel pad peeling method? Looking at some monkey boots but the 5402 last is a wrte-off for me so I'd need them to be the rare few that were made on 4497.

    Nice pickup of a classic pair. I would personally stick with neutral creme polish and use rennovateur every once in a while (twice yearly at most).     It's actually been going well so far. I mean, I did buy a pair of Tricker's yesterday, but they were for the wife, so I'm sure this doesn't count. Sometimes a price is so good that it would be borderline irresponsible not to buy them, even for a non-boot buyer like me.

    You're probably right, although I swallowed the marketing BS and went for the Saphir medaille d'or. It works great but then so might the cheap stuff.

    They look great - 6 weeks though... I always choose rubber over leather for the reasons you describe. Even if I don't plan to wear my shoes in wet weather, the toe wear issue on leather drives me insane.
