Random Fashion Thoughts (Part 3: Style farmer strikes back) - our general discussion thread

Oh sure, agreed. I like the idea of a purposefully un-businesslike suit worn with an open collar shirt.

Those are abominations. But they also show you how odd and unusual traditional menswear has become, with shoes like that being the norm. Nobody should have to say anything to you. Use your eyes.

What do you do for work and where do you live? Are your colleagues similarly dressed?

Random Fashion Thoughts (Part 3: Style farmer strikes back) - our general discussion thread

I say this all as a recovering traditional menswear acolyte. Easy to not realize how much of bubble one has put himself in. That’s not to say I don’t love the way traditional menswear can look—but rather that I accept that (1) society and culture change and (2) dressing well demands awareness...

Random Fashion Thoughts (Part 3: Style farmer strikes back) - our general discussion thread

On the contrary, wearing a suit gets negative comments and attention all the time. Where I agree is that said suit-wearers often convince themselves that, actually, they are behaving / dressing in a superior way—any negative attention or feedback is then dismissed. They talk about propriety...

Absolutely no one: Traditional menswear holdouts: This is totally normal.

Random Fashion Thoughts (Part 3: Style farmer strikes back) - our general discussion thread

It’s not that traditional menswear feels like a duty. It’s that it is not the socially appropriate choice much of the time and those who adhere to it almost religiously don’t seem to understand how upside down they have become. One may feel it is “joy and expression of personality” to dress...

Random Fashion Thoughts (Part 3: Style farmer strikes back) - our general discussion thread

Manton is walking around in sweats / athleisure—no joke. Important thing I realized is how restrictive and narrow-minded traditional menswear can be. It is purposefully aloof versus modern, popular culture in a way that I came to find distasteful. It is not, despite what anyone might insist...

The What Are You Wearing Today (WAYWT) Discussion Thread, Part II

Good one. I like a more tailored fit on you. The big, baggy all over aesthetic that has become the norm everywhere tends to lack tension and sizzle.

This topic recently came up in the WAYWT thread. I’m not in tech, but am tech-adjacent and 42. While there is certainly a way one can dress that can look too juvenile, I don’t think that rules out any specific genres. Plus, you’re 38, not 78. You can dress however you like as long as you do it...

The What Are You Wearing Today (WAYWT) Discussion Thread, Part II

15 years ago, I wouldn’t have batted an eye at idea of wearing a tweed jacket walking around NYC. But, turns out, brown is for farmer.

Academia is its own separate universe. Maybe the only field where you can wear a tweed jacket anymore and not look like a space alien.

What level are you? I wouldn’t fault an analyst or associate for dressing up in formal business attire, but certainly safe to ditch the tie.

I’m a Wall Street investment banker, so for starters, I think your premise may require a little re-investigation. Granted, I cover technology / software companies, so I inhabit the far casual end in the scheme of investment banking. However, even speaking more broadly for the profession, suits...

Neither—totally off the rack. XS fits perfectly.

    Cashmere Sweater Hierarchy

Just bought a black turtleneck in black baby cashmere from Loro Piana. Phenomenal fit—similar to a Celine turtleneck I was looking at. I’ve historically stayed away from Loro Piana due to the blousy golf dad cut they typically use. Obviously, they’ve changed things up!

    The official CELINE thread

Well, that is stupid. However, if the jacket does not have working button holes, you should absolutely shorten from the sleeve end and NOT from the shoulder. Shortening at the shoulder is major surgery with much greater risk.

    The official CELINE thread

Exactly the same can be said of the store’s tailor, except that you have less transparency. Store tailors have f*cked up clothes of mine—including at SLP and Loro Piana. It can be a fight to get them to replace the ruined item. Anyway, this is about shortening a jacket sleeve. It is a basic...
