I'm carrying less cash these days, but I still don't feel comfortable carrying less than US$20 for random events like thanking a stranger for helping you out of a jam or realizing too late that a business doesn't take cards. How many of you have abandoned carrying cash completely?

I keep two emergency $20s in my wallet for in case the cards are down, etc.

I carry less and less. But I do try to carry enough for those occasions when a card isn't taken. Moreover, should I find myself face to face with a mugger ... I want him/her to feel enough satisfaction that I avoid harm.

Usually, I keep money on my credit card. I have it all the time, and I don't have to worry about forgetting money at home. However, carrying cash is vital for those who travel or live in a small town because several shops or restaurants don't accept credit cards. I remember when my husband and I decided to live in a van for a short period to experience something new. My mom told me to study vans before moving in and showed us https://moneysavedmoneyearned.com/living-in-a-van/. That was the only time cash played a crucial role in our lives.

Opposite here - carrying more than ever before - whilst a wallet shouldn't be bulging all the time, it should be filled to a healthy degree.

Plus, without sounding like some reddit reading basement dwelling c.theorist - if we all stop using cash it passes a lot of control out of hands.

Can’t stand cash only businesses and I refuse to frequent them. They’re simply avoiding paying their fair share of taxes, while the rest of us contribute our money to the roads they drive, etc…

I went through a "cash first" exercise in 2019 and was amazed about how much money I saved by not spending on superfluous items throughout the day. My lows were about $20 or less during the workday and up to $200 for a weekend night out. I still purchased what I felt like when I felt like (more on days with more cash of course), but still saved hundreds of dollars a month. I reserved my card to perhaps a date night, rideshare, groceries.

More people, need to carry cash . I'm so tired of people on the street, using venmo.

Like to have at least $40 in my wallet at all times. Nowadays the clerk manning the register at the supermarket almost does a double-take when you respond to "Debit or credit?" with "Cash."

Contactless debit card/phone app is all you need now in the UK. Since the first Covid-19 lock down I haven't carried any cash at all. The company I work for has stopped accepting cash completely (card or apple pay only now). I'm pretty sure HMRC would love to stop cash transactions altogether if they could.

I went to this bar charging $9.95 for a Pacifico beer (that was their cheapest too) and also did not take cash. I was pretty outraged.
