My flight on United from Sydney to LAX was canceled the other day. I had to go on a later flight which was only a couple hours later. They had me fill out some form and mail in to obtain a "gesture of goodwill" from them. Anyone knows what I might be getting? A free ticket to somewhere United flies or a free class upgrade or something?

Higher airfare? No union problems? lower overhead?

I am no expert, but besides other things that have already been pointed out, I think it has to do with the higher paying business and first class cabins. In general, the business and first class cabins are pretty full of PAYING customers on airlines like Singapore, while on US carriers many people sitting in those cabins are just upgraded customers from economy.

I saw an interesting bit on TV which showed a US carrier flying from NYC to LAX (?)...after all the cargo, mail, and passengers, they only made like $200 on the whole flight!

Not sure exactly what you'll get but it will probably be a either a voucher for a United ticket discount or a check to spend on whatever you want.

I think a "gesture of goodwill" means some tongue action from one of Globetrotter's American Airlines stews.

Hey JB, what happened to the BA 777 that crashed in LHR yesterday? Mechanical, electrical failure? Pilot error? Wind shear? I thought the 777 had a exemplar safety record, was this the first 777 crash?

let's put this in perspective - thousands of people around the world are trying to figure this out to know if they should do something about the rest of the fleet of 777's running around, and you are asking a 16 year old in Virginia?

Well, duh. I've heard they send out a memo to everyone that works in the industry. Not just the ones working for the airlines themselves mind you, but also the airport workers. Yup.

Well, as we have found out, he is the reason for everything that goes about in airports all over the world. Not only does he control flights, but if luggage is lost as well.

Yea, I got the memo about the BA incident, but since I am a 16-year-old from Virginia that runs the industry I'll let you all get your news from Fox or wherever rather than from the statement sent to everyone.

Yes I'm sure they sent the top super secret memo to the baggage handlers and servants.

Not necessarily, I work in information logistics (responsible for getting memos to who they need to go to). Maybe I happened to have a chance to sneak a peek at it
