Was looking forward to this and I've not been let down even after multiple listens. Atmospheric and soulful. It goes places. Sander's tone is still so him but in this long extended piece he's not wailing like he did as a younger man. Repeated phrases keep a minimalist background for Sadnders to weave in and outside.

Listening to a freebie CD through a newly acquired Revox B225 that I had 'lampizated'. The machine is very temperamental in terms of loading/ reading CDs but sounds great when it gets going.

@chobochobo Free disks usually aren't that quality of talent. I think I found a Mili-vanili remix cd in one used CD player I picked up. By "lampizated" did you get a tube stage added after the DAC? I used to read his blog ages ago when he was more DIY hobby oriented. I pretty much stopped CD purchases around 2001 and bought only vinyl... So gave away my good CD player to my father as his system was CD playback.

One great CD that is an all time favourite of mine is from Bill Evan's long time bass player Eddie Gomez. The recording of "we will meet again" on it is so good. One of my favourite recordings. The composition is great in it self but this particular recording stands out for a few reasons. The album came out after Evan's passing so could be seen as a tribute - as was the original for Evan's brother. With the title and Evan's emotional compositions and the depth it's just so very rich. The recording features Gomez in what must be a multi-track recording where he is accompanying himself with a second bass track. Contrast to this is a close recording of guitar and the subtly of the layering. It just always seems to draw me in.

Been listening to Red again recently. I think it’s badass that he was a boxer in the 40’s before joining Miles’ band in the 50’s. This is a 2020 reissue of a trio recording, but I really dig his comping on quartet/quintet groups he’s worked with (trying to level up my voicings/patterns).

Do you guys have any recommendations for literature on jazz? Some good resources, maybe? A good reviewer? A good magazine?

I’ve read Marshall Stearns’ History of Jazz.
Gioia’s The history of jazz.
Philip Larkin’s All what jazz

All three quite excellent!
