Tendies were about $20
Water was $6 but you could refill any bottle for free
High noons and beers were $12
Specialty cocktails and champagne were $18-23
A personal pizza was $2x, i can’t remember exactly
Sandwiches, nachos, tacos, were also $2x

Nice. Nothing like seeing a driver's first race or win... I caught Seb's 1st race and Ham's 1st win back in the day, back when the Indy F1 race was full of white dudes throwing beer cans at the big video displays yelling "speak English" during post-race interviews and the food tents sold smoked turkey legs for $7, biscuits and gravy for $4, pulled pork sandos for $6, and burgers/hot dogs for $4. Water was $4, beer was $5, and a pack of cigarettes (!) was $5.

Rewatched the race on F1 TV. We saw so much action from our grandstand (turn 18) and it was great seeing the end of each lap, as well as the anticipation of watching the pitstop strategies revealed, since we were at the pit entrance.

But holy hell did we miss a lot of action elsewhere on the track! We saw a lot of it on the monitors, but the onsite crew just couldn’t keep the entire battle in the frame most of the time.

I’d also missed Max’s radio message complaining about how he couldn’t get the car to turn. Yeah right bruh you were on sprint pole, dominated the sprint, got on pole again, everything was fine for 37 laps, and suddenly the car setup is no good? he was immensely gracious to Lando in the post race interview though - i was very pleasantly surprised.

Fwiw, he complained about the same thing during qualifying and the sprint.

All in all, good that he got beat for once. Lando deserves it, and Max needs to be kept on his toes.

Well, gracious Max didn't last 24 hours. He's now blaming the loss on Perez damaging his car in the beginning.

Pretty amazing that you witnessed those milestones from two all-time greats.

Tbf my perception is that it’s mainly Miami and Vegas (and maybe Monaco?) that are giving GP’s a bad name with this pricing nonsense. we went to Spa ‘22 and I don’t think our group of 3 spent more than €300 over the entire 3-day event in concessions.

But then again, at Spa the food was store-bought burgers and dogs being grilled by the guys out back.

Tbf my perception is that it’s mainly Miami and Vegas (and maybe Monaco?) that are giving GP’s a bad name with this pricing nonsense. we went to Spa ‘22 and I don’t think our group of 3 spent more than €300 over the entire 3-day event in concessions.

But then again, at Spa the food was store-bought burgers and dogs being grilled by the guys out back.

Yeah, the attempt to make all these US races "lux" events is terrible, but also pretty funny to see how the pendulum has swung the other way in America since they were having a hard time getting people to attend the Indy GP even with pretty cheap tickets towards the end. Lucky you got to attend a Spa race though... been on my list for a long time -- how was getting to/from the track?

Spa-Francorchamps is a small town so there’s not a lot of lodging and parking infrastructure. We stayed in Liege and got there via rental car easily enough. The biggest pain was getting shuttled from offsite dirt lots to the circuit, but you get there eventually.

If the McLarens can truly run even with the Red Bulls from here on out, I will be interested to see if that brings out the old Mad Max. He's been a more disciplined driver for the last couple of years only because the car afforded him that choice. Does the reckless, entitled menace come out to play if he's actually challenged?

There's always a place the higher ups go. Back in the 00s, for the Canada GP they would all go to Milos Friday or Saturday night. My friend and I always got dinner there race weekend and one year the table next to us were the Ferrari higher-ups like Todt (and Michelle Yeoh) and Arrivabene (when he was still at Marlboro). Another time I was on my way to the bathroom and Flavio and his entourage arrived blocking my way, as I waited to get by, one of his assistants told him that Tara Reid called and wanted to stop by to which he asked, "Who?" At Indy they of course tended to go to St. Elmo Steak.

You need to learn better PR-speak. What you should've said was, "the concession prices reflected the highly varied levels of disposable income of racegoers", like Hard Rock Stadium president and CEO, Tom Garfinkel did. Functionally the same thing, but so much classier.
