While I already have your previous balmacaan, I guess it wouldn't hurt to have another one.
Wide 2 is exactly what I'm looking for. Black and white herringbone with just a little bit of red speckles. Please please pleeeeeeaaaase make this happen.

Oh 'eck — you're not the chap who found the strap an irritation and took to it with a pair of scissors, are you?

Memory like an elephant... Indeed I did! I still have it somewhere though. I did the same to a Maharishi that had the same strap.

This latest one doesn’t seem to be listed on his site.

And on the main Garmology page (which is growing impractically long):

Thanks sincerely to everyone for their input.

Time now (he says, trying for authority despite having never chaired a meeting in his life) to draw a line under this round of voting.

It is clear wide herringbones are the favourite overall ...

wide x 56
standard x 30

And then the full breakdown in order of popularity is ...

wide 7 x 14
wide 9 x 9
wide 1 x 8
standard 5 x 7
standard 7 x 5
wide 3 x 5
wide 6 x 5
wide 5 x 4
wide 8 x 4
standard 9 x 3
standard 10 x 3
wide 2 x 3
wide 10 x 3
standard 1 x 2
standard 2 x 2
standard 3 x 2
standard 6 x 2
standard 11 x 2
standard 12 x 1
standard 13 x 1
wide 4 x 1

How about we take the top 9 — all with 5 or more votes — into the final vote?

Sorted by name that's ...

A few photographs here of recent adventures in the mid-layer department.

There's the popover shirt here in linen suiting from Northern Ireland ...

... and then the smock in cotton panama from Lancashire.

I couldn't say for sure ...

... but in timely fashion, we are finishing off today a sample of the new, long balmacaan, made in a fairly wide herringbone which I will be able to say for sure is either wide or standard or somewhere in between.

I'll endeavour to post some photographs in the next day or two.

The poll is now closed and the results are now in ...

The winners of the contest and thus the two cloths we'll use to make the balmacaan over the summer are Wide 7 (the green one) and Wide 9 (the grey one).

They will make an excellent coat, both of them. I can't wait to get it made.

I'll put in a phone call to Donegal tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who voted.

And, tomorrow, I will post photographs of the now-made sample of the new balmacaan (which is in a fairly wide herringbone itself, albeit one woven in Yorkshire on account of it being the only similar cloth we have to hand).

If anyone is potentially interested in pre-ordering (which is the same as ordering but with a pre- at the front for some reason), please let me know. We haven't formalised the process yet but it wouldn't hurt to gauge numbers!

And in other news, we have a few new knitted articles at the workshop right.

The cardigan is the same as previous years (most notably with the sleeve being half raglan and half set in, and the heavy knitted elbow patch) ... apart now we have lowered the break quite a bit. I can't quite recall the thinking behind this, as I decided it a year ago, but I like the result: the cardigan seems more easy and relaxed.

And then the ... t-shirt. If only there was a better name. To quote some blurb-head on the website, "a t-shirt, this, sure — if you want to be technical about it. But it is a t-shirt from an alternative history of the t-shirt, where rather than from about 1950 racing to the bottom — the basic that bunks now with socks and pants — it became instead a classic, enduring, and crowning measure for traditional knitting."

They're all hand-framed with super-soft cotton and joyously slinky to behold.
